Servers, group messages and voice/video rooms organized around games, friends or shared interests. A small friend server is a different experience from a large public community. Ask which servers a teen belongs to and whether server members can message them privately.

The essentials
Age, contact, spending
Minimum age
At least 13 in many regions; Discord’s local minimum can be higher. Adult sexual content is restricted to adults.
Age check
Account age information and age-assurance requirements vary by region and feature. A birthday alone is not proof that another member is a peer.
Who can contact teens
Server members may be able to send direct messages depending on settings. Friend requests, group DMs and voice rooms are additional contact routes.
Disappearing content
Ordinary server and DM messages are not a Snapchat-style disappearing feed. Deletion does not remove screenshots, copied text or another service’s logs.
Public content
Posts in a server can be seen by members with channel access. Invite links and community membership can expand the audience beyond real-life friends.
Spending
Nitro subscriptions, boosts and other paid features can create recurring charges. Free entry to a server does not mean every feature or offer is free.

Official controls
How to set them up
Connect Discord Family Center
Open User Settings → Family Center on the parent and teen accounts and complete the connection request. Review available activity insights and safety settings. Family Center is not a transcript viewer and cannot simply remove the teen from every server.
Official instructions → (opens in new tab)
Privacy
What gets shared
Use aliases that do not reveal school or location. Review DMs from server members, friend requests and whether accounts from other services are connected.
Safety
What parents should know
- Discord’s official guidance says linked parents cannot read private messages through Family Center.
- Discord’s rules prohibit exposing minors to adult sexual content. Reporting, blocking and leaving a server are practical safety steps, not signs of disloyalty to a group.
Safeguards described here are reported by the company in its own materials (see Discord: official safety, eligibility or parent guidance (opens in new tab)). They are not independent safety guarantees, and Lowkey has not tested them.
