🥀
Wilted rose
What does 🥀 mean in a text?
Quick answer: 🥀 in a text usually means heartbreak, and most of the time it's fake heartbreak: a dramatic, joking "this hurts." It took the broken heart's job.
Also searched as: dead rose emoji, wilted flower emoji, 🥀🥀🥀
What does 🥀 mean?
Mock heartbreak. The main use. Something small went wrong, and your teen is acting devastated about it on purpose. The Guardian says younger users send it in place of 💔, "to signify sadness, or ironically, to suggest mock-heartbreak."
Real sadness. Some people mean it straight. Merriam-Webster says it is used "earnestly by some people, and mockingly by others," and its core meaning is heartbreak or romantic loss.
Is it still cool? Fading. Linguist Adam Aleksic told The Guardian in September 2026 that it is over for the youngest users now that older people know it, and Merriam-Webster notes many have moved on to the low battery emoji, 🪫.
Where did 🥀 come from?
The broken heart, 💔, came to be seen as overused, says Merriam-Webster. In early 2025, TikTok videos pushed 🥀 as the replacement, and it surged in popularity that year. The Guardian reports that Aleksic traces the trend to TikTok meme accounts, which declared the broken heart "mainstream."

How teens use it
As a one-emoji reaction. A single 🥀 after small bad news (sold out, rained out, grounded) means "tragic," with an eye roll built in.
At the end of a complaint. Added to their own message, it turns a grumble into a joke at their own expense.
In comments. Under a post about a breakup, a loss or a bad day, it can be playful or kind, depending on the post.
Sincerely. With a real breakup or falling-out, it means what it looks like: "that hurts."
Is 🥀 rude or harmless?
Harmless. It isn't rude, and it isn't a warning sign. The joke version is about small things, and it's usually aimed at the sender's own luck, not at anyone else.
Our read: if 🥀 shows up next to something genuinely sad, like a breakup or a falling-out, it means what it looks like, so treat it that way.
What to say to your teen
If your teen sends 🥀 after you say no, they're playing wounded. A light reply keeps it friendly: "Very tragic. Still no." You don't need to explain the emoji back to them.
If it comes after real news, skip the joke and check in: "That sounds rough. Want to talk about it?" Same emoji, different moment.
