Phone-number-based messaging, calls and group chats. It can be a practical way to coordinate family, clubs or classmates, but groups can include people a teen does not know well. Encryption protects transmission; it does not stop a recipient forwarding a message.

The essentials
Age, contact, spending
Minimum age
Generally 13 or the higher regional minimum for independent use. Official help describes parent-managed accounts rolling out in some regions.
Age check
Age information and review processes depend on region. Parent-managed availability is gradual, so check the current account options rather than assuming it exists everywhere.
Who can contact teens
People who know the number can attempt contact. Review group-add permissions, unknown callers and blocking; being added to a group can broaden exposure.
Disappearing content
Optional disappearing-message timers do not prevent screenshots, copying or all forms of retention. Status posts are temporary but can be captured.
Public content
Private chats differ from Status, communities and channels. Group members may see identifying account information; review profile photo and number exposure.
Spending
The basic personal messaging service is free. Payment, shopping or business features vary by region; scams can request money even when the app itself does not charge.

Official controls
How to set them up
Run Privacy Checkup together
Open Settings → Privacy and review who can add the teen to groups, see their profile information and contact them. Check whether parent-managed account options are offered in your region; do not assume a universal parent dashboard.
Official instructions → (opens in new tab)
Privacy
What gets shared
Use Settings → Privacy or Privacy Checkup to review personal information, groups and contact options. End-to-end encrypted personal chats do not make the other person trustworthy.
Safety
What parents should know
- Official WhatsApp help distinguishes independent age eligibility from parent-managed accounts, which are rolling out gradually.
- Check unexpected money requests through a separate trusted contact method. A familiar profile photo can be copied by an impersonator.
Safeguards described here are reported by the company in its own materials (see WhatsApp: official safety, eligibility or parent guidance (opens in new tab)). They are not independent safety guarantees, and Lowkey has not tested them.
