A toy? It’s 15% alcohol.

These brightly colored, tennis ball-sized plastic balls are showing up in teen hands, and stores keep getting caught selling them to kids as young as 13. They’re called BuzzBallz. With catchy names like Watermelon Smash and Berry Cherry Limeade, it’s pretty obvious why kids like them. This summer they even teamed up with Pop-Tarts on a flavor.

This is not an energy drink. It’s not a sports drink. Even though that’s exactly what it looks like, which is the whole problem.

Why they’re so popular with teenagers:

They’re small and discreet. About the size of a tennis ball. One fits in a hoodie pocket. It doesn’t look like traditional alcohol, so it doesn’t register as alcohol.

They’re cheap. About $3 to $4 each.

They’re strong and easy to chug. Each ball is up to 15% alcohol in about the size of a juice box. That’s roughly the equivalent of almost two shots of vodka. They also carry about 20 grams of carbs each, roughly 5 teaspoons of sugar, which masks the alcohol taste completely.
